Ford Motor Company has been an innovator in safety technology throughout its 104-year history. From its introduction of laminated glass window shields in 1927 and factory-installed safety belts in 1956, Ford has led the way not just in technical achievements, but in lifesaving features.

Ford Motor Company’s Key Safety Innovations

* In 1970, Ford Motor Company was the first U.S. manufacturer to provide three-point safety belts with automatic locking retractors. Volvo Cars was the first company to provide three-point safety belts.
* Ford Motor Company was first automaker to offer head and chest side air bags, beginning in the 1999 model year.
* Ford Motor Company was the first automaker to offer safety belt-reminder technology called BeltMinder™ in 1999. BeltMinder has been praised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that safety belt usage increases significantly in vehicles with the system. IIHS stated: "...if this feature were in every vehicle on U.S. roads, it could save about 700 lives each year.
* Ford Motor Company, in 1999, was the first carmaker to introduce emergency trunk releases as standard equipment throughout its car lineup.
* Ford invented and was the first to offer rollover deploying side curtain air bags known as Safety Canopy, beginning with the 2002 1/2 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer. Today, the Safety Canopy is available on nearly all Ford Motor Company SUVs. Today, Safety Canopy is available on nearly all Ford Motor Company SUVs, and crossovers.
* In 2002, Ford was the first company to offer Roll Stability Control™, the most advanced vehicle stability feature in the world. It goes beyond most stability control systems by monitoring and controlling roll motion to reduce the risk of rollover. Today, Roll Stability Control is available on nearly all Ford Motor Company SUVs, vans and crossovers.

Ford Motor Company is the only North American manufacturer with a full-motion-based driving simulator. Since 2000, Ford has used its VIRtual Test Track EXperiment (VIRTTEX) to study everyday driving tasks and how they affect driver performance during a variety of simulated driving experiences.
